Canada reacts to Indira Gandhi assassination posters: ‘Violence is not acceptable’
Canada’s Public Safety Minister said in a post on X that promoting violence is not acceptable in the North American country. Last week, posters depicting the assassination of Indira Gandhi were put up by Khalistan supporters in Vancouver.

Promoting violence is never acceptable in Canada, a minister has said after Khalistani supporters put up posters in Vancouver depicting the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
An Indian-origin Canadian MP has also expressed concern on this issue, saying that by doing so, Pro-Khalistan supporters trying to create fear of violence among Hindu Canadians,
“This week, there were reports of images depicting the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Vancouver,” Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic A. LeBlanc said on XTV.
“Incitement to violence is never acceptable in Canada,” he said.
In 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards.
Meanwhile, Indo-Canadian MP Chandra Arya, who represents the Nepean constituency in Canada’s House of Commons, said, “Pro-Khalistan Hindus in Vancouver have come up with posters of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s bullet-riddled body with guns in the hands of her assassinated bodyguards. They are again trying to instill fear of violence among Hindu-Canadians.”
“This is a continuation of the threats (Gurpatwant Singh) received after a similar incident in Brampton a few years ago and a few months ago. Pannu of Sikh for Justice asked Hindus to go back to IndiaArya, an MP from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s party, said.
Pannu is one of the prominent leaders of the Khalistan movement and is the legal advisor and spokesperson of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), which aims to promote the idea of a separate Sikh state.
Arya called on law enforcement agencies in Canada to take immediate action.
“If this continues unchallenged, images of guns can easily be used to send a message that has some real consequences. The prominence of the bindi on Indira Gandhi’s forehead is aimed at ensuring that the targets are Hindus in Canada,” he said.
India has long maintained that its “core issue” with Canada is the space being given to separatists, terrorists and anti-India elements in that country.
