Xiaomi unveils the tag, we go together

Xiaomi launched a tracking tag simply called Xiaomi Tag. We’ve got one in our hands and can see some reasons why you might want to pick one up over trackers from other brands.

First of all, how is it You One can get one – an individual tag costs €18, while a pack of four costs €60. For comparison, a second-generation Apple AirTag is €35 (or €120 for four), a Samsung SmartTag2 is €40 (€130 for four) and a Moto Tag 2 is also €40 (€130 for four). Xiaomi undercutting competitors on price is nothing new, but in this case the difference is double or more.

Xiaomi Tag is slim and cleverly designed

Secondly, Xiaomi overpowered it in terms of design – the tag is 7.2mm thin. Apple, Samsung and Motorola tags are all 8.0 mm thick. Although you may scoff at a difference of less than a millimeter, it doesn’t matter when you’re trying to fit it in your wallet or the inner pocket of a travel bag or backpack.

Xiaomi was particularly clever in terms of design – the metal ring has a built-in way to attach to a key ring. This is something that only Samsung tags offer, while Apple and Motorola tags require some kind of case. That said, the opening is quite small and you can’t hook it onto a carabiner like the Samsung Tag.

It’s a trade-off – the Xiaomi Tag is 46.5mm long and 31mm wide, while the Samsung Tag is 52.4mm long and slightly narrower at 28.8mm. If you want to attach the Xiaomi Tag to a carabiner you can always put a key ring on it.

Unlike its rivals, the Xiaomi Tag doesn’t lock you into one ecosystem – it works with Apple Find My and Google Android Find Hub. Unfortunately, it can’t work with both at once. Still, these tags will be used for years and you won’t have to swap them if you decide to switch between Apple and Android.

Talking about using it for years, it has a standard CR2032 button cell inside, which should provide it with power for about a year.

The tag uses Bluetooth LE 5.4 to detect proximity. Once you get close enough, you can activate its piezoelectric buzzer to help you find your lost item. Additionally, you can set the tag to Lost Mode – this allows you to add contact information for anyone who finds it. All they need to do is tap their phone to read the built-in NFC tag. Note that this only works with Apple Find My.

The Xiaomi Tag is rated IP67, so you can clip it to the outside of your backpack or luggage and not worry about dust, dirt, and water destroying it over time. It has a scratch-resistant finish which makes it look beautiful as well.
