Vir Das, reacting to the alleged crackdown on the social media accounts of the Cockroach Janata Party, termed the efforts to shut them down as a “completely foolish move” which is only going to strengthen the legitimacy of the online movement.

His reaction came soon after CJP founder Abhijit Dubke alleged that several accounts linked to the group have either been hacked or blocked.

Earlier, Abhijeet Dubke had alleged that both the organization and his personal social media accounts were attacked. In a post on Twitter, he wrote, “Action on Cockroach Janata Party. – Instagram page hacked. – My personal Instagram hacked. – Twitter account blocked. – Back up account also deleted.”

He further urged people not to trust any posts coming from those accounts, adding that the team currently does not have access to any of their platforms and any posts made thereafter should not be considered as official statements from the Cockroach Janata Party.

The political movement was started on 16 May by Abhijit Dubke following a comment by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.

A few days ago, the founder had also shared a screenshot indicating that the CJP X account had been frozen in India in response to an alleged legal demand. While sharing the picture, he wrote, “As expected, the account of Cockroach Janata Party has been blocked in India.”

Vir Das then reposted the update with the comment, “This is giving the full Streisand effect.”

The Streisand Effect refers to situations where efforts to censor or suppress information ultimately increase public attention toward it.

Talking about the work front, Vir Das recently made his debut in the field of direction and was also seen in Happy Patel: Dangerous SpyProduced by Aamir Khan. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
