Universal Illumination announces the release date for Minions 3

It’s official! After the massive success of Despicable Me 4, the studio has announced that Minions 3 will hit theaters in 2027. Written by Brian Lynch, the upcoming film will be directed by franchise veteran director Pierre Coffin.

Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan – executive producer of The Super Mario Bros. Movie – will produce Minions 3.

More than ten years after its creation, the franchise has become one of the biggest animated franchises and the biggest projects under Illumination’s banner. It has recently grossed nearly $5 billion at the global box office, which is the combined total of the Despicable Me and Minions films.

The success of Despicable Me 4

This franchise has been ruling the animated world for quite some time now, and the success of the fourth installment has proven that it still has a long life ahead of it on the big screen. Despicable Me 4 rocked the box office by grossing $230 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

However, this wasn’t the first time for the franchise, which also features Minions, which is one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. The Oscar-nominated Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 3 grossed over $1 billion at the global box office.

In 2022, Minions: The Rise of Gru made history by earning the highest July 4th opening weekend collection of all time at the domestic box office. The world hasn’t gotten tired of the funky yellow pill-shaped creatures, so it’s not surprising that the studio wants to keep it going.
