Throwback: When Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds said studios make movies from ‘posters and ideas’ instead of scripts

Ryan Reynolds has starred in a lot of superhero movies. It’s not always that he’s in the lead role, and it’s not always that his movies are hits. When the first Deadpool was about to be released, the actor told the truth about why his 2011 film Green Lantern turned out to be a big disappointment, even though it focused on the story of one of the key members of the Justice League.

About Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern

We’re very close to seeing what happens next in the life of Wade Wilson aka the skilled swordsman Deadpool in Deadpool and Wolverine. However, while the antihero’s sudden turn in life was bound to take off, actor Ryan Reynolds has revealed some of the reasons why the 2011 film Green Lantern was a disappointment.

Speaking to Mumbai Mirror in 2016, the Free Guy actor shared some facts. Discussing his thoughts, Reynolds insisted that he wouldn’t have gotten the chance to do Deadpool if his 2011 film had become a hit.

Throwing light on why the film failed to impress fans, The Adam Project actor said that the fate of a film depends entirely on its screenplay.

Elaborating further, the actor said that there were over 150 screenwriters in production for Green Lantern and none of those writers were planning on making it a flop.

However, in his own words, Ryan Reynolds explained that the studio system works a little differently. The actor said, “They make movies based on the poster and the idea.” He further added that they first need a script and then plan to make it better.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard actor further added that sometimes studios give everyone a release date and ask every writer to write a script. He also said that spending a lot of money and forcing people to write great plots is not the way to make a good film.

Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool and Wolverine

This isn’t the first time Ryan Reynolds will be seen alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. He was first seen as the antihero in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Even then, he was cast as Deadpool. However, that wasn’t written well and had really low-quality CGI.

Now that Deadpool has become a fan-favorite character since the 2016 introductory film, Ryan Reynolds, who previously called Deadpool his second personality in the aforementioned publication, is set to break records.

He will be seen alongside several other great mutants from Fox Studios’ mutant franchise in the only MCU film to be released this year.

Deadpool and Wolverine will release on July 26, 2024.
