‘Ready for war’: Iran draws red line for America, says no final talks until terms of MoU are met

Iran says no further talks unless US respects MOU

Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned on Tuesday that Tehran is ready for war if the United States does not abide by the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). He further stressed that negotiations on a final agreement would not move forward unless Washington met its commitments.Speaking in a television interview, Ghalibaf said, “We are ready for war if the other side does not abide by the MOU.”Citing incidents in the Persian Gulf, he accused the United States of violating the understanding reached to end the recent conflict.“We consider the events taking place these nights in the Persian Gulf to be a violation of the understanding on ending the war, and we will certainly react to this, and naturally, the other side will also react.”He said current discussions between Iran and the United States are focused on implementing the 14-point memorandum of understanding rather than negotiating a final agreement.“We signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)… We are in talks to fulfill Article 13 of this MoU. The naval blockade was lifted, and that was one of the major successes of this MoU.”He also said Iran has exported more than 40 million barrels of oil since the blockade was lifted. On the Strait of Hormuz, Ghalibaf said Iran and Oman retain sovereignty over the strategic waterway and Tehran will continue to regulate navigation.“Sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz rests with Iran and Oman, and traffic in the Strait is in accordance with arrangements that Iran specifies.”He said the free passage through the strait will remain in place without any charges during the 60-day implementation period of the memorandum, after which a tolling system will be introduced for the services provided.Ghalibaf said, “The text of the MOU states that passage through the strait is free only for 60 days. Iran will not give up its rights in the Strait of Hormuz under any circumstances and these are our territorial waters.”Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai said Tehran had no plans to meet with US officials in the coming days.“In fact, we have no plans to meet the US side at any level in the next few days.”Baghai clarified that the discussions taking place in Doha are technical talks related to implementing the memorandum of understanding, including the release of Iran’s frozen assets, and are not political talks with Washington.Baghai said, “What will be done tomorrow in Doha is a discussion on the implementation of the clauses of the memorandum of understanding, including the release of Iran’s frozen assets. We will implement our commitments as long as the other side implements its commitments.”His comments came as Qatar confirmed that technical-level talks between Iran and the United States are continuing in Doha, while clarifying that there is ‘no high-level meeting’ between the two sides at present.
