Rai: How did the comedians of Tamil cinema Santhanam, Sori, and Yogi Babu change the lead roles?

Tamil cinema is always known for the creation of great actors, whether from a dramatic background or from uncontrolled roles through artists infections. While struggling many, some actors grow prominently with their skills and perseverance.

Similarly, actors like Santhanam, Sori, and Yogi Babu started their career with uncontrolled appearances, went into comedic roles, and are now headline as leads. As these three actors, once stereotyped as “comedian”, now acting in three different films under his name, let’s take a look at his journey for his current position.

Start as comedian

Talking about the three actors, let’s start with the person who infected in front of others in a major role. Actor Santhanam, who is also a producer in Tamil cinema, started his career as a comedian on television before appearing in films.

Coming into actor Sori’s film career, unlike his contemporary, the actor initially struggled for acting roles, inspiring him to work as a cleaner.

As he did Menial Jobs to fund his aspirations to become an actor, Sori appeared with uncontrolled roles in many films. From 1998 to 2004, the actor made his platform in cinema among the unnamed characters, even sometimes made comedic gags.

However, it was in 2005 that the actor got his first credit role in Ajit Kumar’s G. In 2009, he made a remarkable appearance in the film Vanilla Kalaadi Kuju, which helped him in land roles with several A-list actors, often played a comedic or side-to-side characters.

While there were criticisms of his ability to carry comedy at one point, the actor responded with a strong performance. Finally, Yogi Babu, another actor, who initially made a name for himself as a comedian, started his career in TV with the show Lolu Sabha, where he worked not as an actor but as an assistant director and writer.

Starting acting in director Amir Ki Yogi, the actor adopted the name of the film as his surname, which he still uses. After starting his career in minor roles, Yogi Babu appeared in several comedic parts, even shared screen space with Shah Rukh Khan in the Chennai Express.

When did his career change and become prominent actor?

All three actors began their career with comic roles, but over time, they managed to title the projects using each of their expertise. Santhanam made his second single lead appearance in the film Vallavanuku Pulam Ayudam.

Muriam Ramna of the film SS Rajamouli was also a remake, making his debut as a producer. With the success of the film, Santhanam infected in more leading roles, strengthening his position in Tamil cinema.

His next film, Devils Double Next Level, is slang to hit the big screen on 16 May, 2025. Interestingly, the actor is also returning to a supporting role with Silambanson TR in the subsequent upcoming upcoming venture.

Sori, on the other hand, broke the conservatism in her career, when director Vetrimaran: Vatrimaran: Viduthalai: Part 1 put her in the lead role with Vijay Sethupathi. As the actor continued the lead roles, he appeared in films like Garudan and will also kill a big screen with Mammen, with the release on 16 May.

Finally, Yogi Babu, unlike the other two, is known to balance both leading roles and character roles. It was in 2019 that the actor made his main debut with Dharmaprabhu, both continued humor and dramatic roles.

Now, he too will kill a big screen with his film Jora Kaiya Thatunga on 16 May this year, making a struggle between the three of them later this week.
