Nation failed its children: Kamal Haasan blames broken system, supports CJP protest

Amid nationwide protests over NEET irregularities and demands for education reforms, actor and politician Kamal Haasan shared a post on Twitter in support of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). His message comes as support for students continues to grow within the film industry in New Delhi.
Referring to the deaths of children in his message, Haasan talked about the state of the education system and said that the country has failed them. He also appealed to teacher and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to end her fast and directly addressed the children of India. Wangchuk is on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28.

Haasan wrote, “When a child cried we should have listened. Instead, we waited until many of our children died. A system where learning replaces coaching, curiosity replaces worry, and merit replaces criminality is bad. A nation has failed when its children get barricades and batons instead of answers.”
Haasan was referring to the violent clashes that took place during CJP’s ‘Chalo Sansad’ march in Central Delhi. As protesters attempted to march towards Parliament on the opening day of the monsoon session, police used tear gas, lathi charge and anti-riot vehicles to disperse the crowd at several places.
Tagging Wangchuk, he said, “The country will need your wisdom to travel further. Please end your fast.” He then wrote, “To the children of India: You are the best of us. You have done your duty. Now the time has come for the country to do its duty through you. May your dreams always be bigger than our failures.” He also tagged CJP and used the hashtag #CJPProtest.
Haasan’s post came after several actors spoke about the protests and expressed solidarity with the students.
Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aditi Rao Hydari, Huma Qureshi, Shabana Azmi, Prakash Raj, Chinmayi Sripada, R Madhavan, Rajkummar Rao and Anupam Kher are among others from the film industry who have spoken out on the protest and sympathized with the students. Haasan’s post joined calls supporting the CJP protests and urging the country to do its duty by the children of India.
