Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s recent film ‘Emergency’ is facing a legal investigation after senior journalist and writer Komi Kapoor, who accuses filmmakers of misusing their work and distorting facts.

Kapoor has alleged that Ranaut -owned Manikarnika Films Private Limited with Netflix, “deliberately and maliciously distorted facts” and exploited his name, claiming that his 2015 book ‘The Emergency: A Personal History’ published by the film Penguin.

Kapoor accused filmmakers of “many factual impurities and misleading illustrations of historical events”.

“My daughter is a lawyer, so on her advice, I included two volumes. While manufacturers had complete artistic freedom to make a film, nothing should be changed that opposes historical facts that are publicly available,” Kapoor explained.

“The contract also said that the author’s name and book cannot be used to promote or exploit the film without pre -written consent. I was in Goa and did not see the film at that time, believing that he would respect the contract. But he is still claiming that he is based on the film book,” he said that he had already sent two legal notices.

Kapoor also referred to the August 2023 WhatsApp exchange along with Akshat Ranaut of Kangana Ranaut’s brother, Manikarnika films, where he stressed that the terms of the contract should be followed and while referring to his book in sources, the film was described as “based on his book”.

Directed and produced by Kangana Ranaut, the film chronic emergency months in India and how people went through it.

Kangana plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film, while Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpad, Venus Nair, Milind Soman and later actor Satish Kaushik are depicted in decisive roles. The Central Bureau of Film Certification (CBFC) delayed the film after withdrawing certification for several months, finally before giving a U/A certificate with some cuts.

‘Emergency’ was produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika films.
