Mammootty is playing his darkest role yet, this is something everyone watching knows Kalamkaval’s Promo. With his amazing track record of playing diverse roles with different levels of complexity, what does Mammootty have in store to blow our minds this time? Another character of actor Vinayakan is sharing the screen with him. Jitin’s Jose’s Kalamkaval Lived up to expectations and imagination? Let’s find out!
Kalamkaval It begins with a middle-aged man (Mammootty) watching television with his family. He gets a call from ‘work’ and leaves at night in his car, only to share the journey with his lover. As they talk about elopement and divorce, the scene ends with Mammootty’s character strangling her, expressing his fascination and satisfaction with the murder.
Meanwhile, police officer Jayakrishnan (Vinayakan) is assigned the task of finding the root cause of communal violence in a village. Upon investigation, Jayakrishnan learns that the riot broke out after a girl eloped with someone. This led to a series of missing women, over a dozen deaths in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Jayakrishnan and his team now set out to find the killer, his motive and the large number of victims.
Director Jitin K Jose Kalamkaval Starts with a murder and grabs your attention from the very first frame. The modus operandi of Mammootty’s character is established through sequences of a retro Tamil song played from an old Walkman, his non-threatening appearance, stylish smoking and devilish smile. The story is divided into chapters with interesting titles that describe the character’s progress.
A police drama is successful if it holds your attention for two hours and twenty minutes. Kalamkaval This is mostly achieved, except when the killer’s efforts to hide are slowed. The film cleverly sets up clues and shows the precision of the police. It relies on smart twists and strong lead performances.
Mammootty, despite playing antagonist roles before, goes all out KalamkavalSo much so that it becomes difficult to separate the actor from his acting, When he wears his sunglasses and smokes, you can’t help but be struck by his charm, like dozens of women in the film, And while he finds many ways to kill his targets, you are left horrified to see the monster he unleashes, Vinayakan, with his subdued and restrained performance, is effective as the police officer investigating the case,
However, Kalamkaval There is no film without flaws. Even with a runtime of two hours and 24 minutes, the film feels longer than it needs to be. Some of the strategies that Mammootty’s character adopts seem repetitive, which drags the film a bit. The explosive interval block, the big reveal and the powerful climax make up for the shortcomings.
Cinematographer Faisal Ali deserves special mention for creating a visual language that reflects the duality of Mammootty’s character. The contrast between his home life bathed in warm, familial light and his hunting grounds captured in darker, more ominous tones effectively establishes the two worlds in which he inhabits. Praveen Prabhakar’s editing keeps the investigative process tight and engaging. The parallel editing between the killer’s actions and the police investigation creates increasing tension.
Mujeeb Majeed’s background score is a character in itself. The composer resists the temptation to be ostentatious, instead choosing a more restrained approach that enhances the psychological thriller aspects.
Director Jitin K Jose shows confidence in his debut film and delivers a complex psychological thriller with maturity. His willingness to unfold the story organically, while trusting his actors and technical team, shows promise. The film’s exploration of the psychology of its killer, while not groundbreaking, is done with enough sophistication to keep audiences engaged.
Kalamkaval Works primarily because it presents a disturbing portrait of a serial killer without judgment, allowing the audience to draw their own conclusions about who creates such monsters. For thriller lovers, Kalamkaval offers enough twists, strong performances and atmospheric filmmaking to be worth watching, even if the runtime does test the patience at times. It is a solid addition to the psychological crime thriller genre in Malayalam cinema, elevated by megastar Mammootty’s career-defining performance.
