Coolie is one of the most awaited films of 2025. At a distance of exactly one month from its release, the first project of Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagarj is one of the biggest box office stakes of Tamil cinema this year. In an interview with Hollywood Reporter India recently, Lokesh Kanagarj dropped the beans on his upcoming venture and revealed how Thalarvar reacted after watching the first cut.
Vikram’s director revealed that the 1991-relief Thalapathi is his favorite Rajinikanth film, and he has tried to achieve a balance of equal levels while writing to Cool. Lokesh said, “With Rajni Sir’s filmography, I love Thalapathy the most, and I have tried to maintain that balance with this film. That is what I have tried to achieve with this writing.”
Kanagarj mentioned that Thalaor hugged him after seeing the dramatic print and accepted his vision. “After watching the film at the dubbing studio, he (Rajinikanth) hugged me and said,” It looked like a Thalapati for me! ” It made my day, and it was the night when I slept very peacefully after several months, ”Lokesh said.
The young Tamil filmmaker underlined that no one can match Mani Ratnam’s writing, but he himself got some relief after receiving such a praise from Rajinikanth himself. “This is what I was telling my friends, too. Even if I am doing a film with Rajni sir, it should be somewhere close to Thalapati. I cannot write a film on the equal to the quality of Mani Sir, because his film and writing are unmatched.

In addition, Lokesh Kanagaraja also revealed that he had earlier heard a fictional film to Rajinikanth, in which the superstar immediately called ‘yes’. However, the pair decided to go with Cool, as it would have taken a year and a half and half more time to roll the fantasy film on the floor. The filmmaker highlighted that about 1000 people have worked on the porter every day and night. It has been 4 months after the shooting, and he often visits the jailer 2 set to meet the Tamil icon as he misses her a lot.
Cool has been closed on August 14, 2025 to struggle with Hrithik Roshan and Junior NTR’s War 2 at the box office. The much awaited film also includes Nagarjuna, Upendra, Saubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Satyaraj and others. Aamir Khan is having a special guest appearance in the film, while Pooja Hegde will be seen shaking feet on a special dance number.
