I will always release my films in theaters first: Anubhav Sinha

Despite the unprecedented growth in streaming platforms recently, filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is not keen to explore OTT again. Sinha is widely known as a director of hard-hitting films. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Sinha said, “I will always release my films in theaters first. I don’t know any better because I don’t know how to shoot for television anymore. If you are making a film purely for television, you have to shoot at least a little differently, and I don’t know how to do that.” For him, cinema will always be an art made for the big screen.

Reminiscing about his filming experience ic814Which became popular after its release as a series, Sinha said that he had never seen the subject as material for the small screen. “ic814 Was not shot for the small screen. It was shot for the big screen. I was lucky that it worked on television. but while doing ic 814I decided this would be the last one,” he said.

The filmmaker explained that for him, scale doesn’t just mean grand visuals or wide frames. He said, “I can’t see close-ups on a big screen. People talk a lot about wide shots on a big screen, but for me, a close-up on a big screen is also a big shot. That’s what inspires me.”

Also, Sinha clarified that he has no bias towards creators choosing the streaming platform. Sinha said, “I’m not against people who make (content) specifically for television. I think it’s probably another art, similar to making films for theatres. But I stand by my decision as long as I can afford to do it.”

How to disclose ic814 On his parting, Sinha said that the project was already in development before he joined. “ic814 That wasn’t my idea originally. Netflix and Matchbox had been developing it for a long time, I think a few years. They had offered it to me earlier too, and again two years later. This time, due to personal reasons, I couldn’t say ‘no’,” he said.

Nevertheless, he chose to stay true to his cinematic instincts. He said, “I said no at first, but when I finally did it, I shot it like a movie. Maybe it worked. But I don’t think I’d want to do it again. I like the whole sound of the theatre, the big screen size – that’s how I enjoy art.”
