Home Alone is one of the most favorite classics among fans and every detail about it is ingrained in the minds of the audience. Similarly, McCallister’s house is one of the unforgettable things from the movie, but over the years, many people have questioned what led Kevin McCallister’s parents to buy such a lavish mansion.

However, it appears we finally have the answer because the film’s director Chris Columbus talked about it during a recent episode of The Hollywood Reporter Awards Chatter podcast.

The director said that there was a discussion about it at the time with John Hughes (who reportedly wrote and produced the classic film) and they came to the decision over his job. He shared that his mother, Kate (played by Catherine O’Hara), was “a very successful fashion designer”, as evidenced by the mannequins kept in the family basement.

When it comes to the main character’s father, Peter (played by John Heard), the director said, “Based on John Hughes’s own experience, the father may have worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did. Did.”

However, he reportedly rejected a profession that netizens speculated would result in criminals Harry and Marv (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern respectively) being drawn to his home and that he was – ” Not organized crime – even though at the time, there was a lot of organized crime in Chicago.”

Columbus also spoke about initially not being sure about casting Macaulay Culkin, while on the other hand, John Hughes was repeatedly coming down on casting him. He said, “That’s why John Hughes was such a great producer for a director and I learned so much from him.”

The directory states that Hughes asked him if he would meet Culkin, to which Columbus agreed but also said he wanted to meet everyone else and so he met 300 other children. .

He called it “a complete waste of time”, as he met Culkin again and it was “magical”.
