Did Deepika Padukone support Sonam Wangchuk amid her hunger strike? here is the truth
A viral screenshot claiming that Deepika Padukone had supported Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike has sparked debate amid widespread silence from Bollywood, even as some film celebrities publicly expressed their support for the activist.

A screenshot is being widely circulated on social media claiming that actress Deepika Padukone shared an Instagram story supporting the hunger strike of educationist and activist Sonam Wangchuk and later deleted it. Soon reports started coming in about the authenticity of the Instagram post.
However, the claim is false. There is no evidence that the actor ever shared such a story, and the viral screenshot has been deemed fabricated.
The image, which has gained popularity due to its political message, is the second fake social media post in Deepika’s name to go viral in less than six months. Reports have confirmed that the alleged story never appeared on his verified Instagram account.
The viral screenshot shows that it is an Instagram story in which Deepika has reportedly re-shared a post about Wangchuk with the line, “He is fasting. We are scrolling.” It also credited the actor with two additional statements: “Why is no one speaking about this? We are living through the darkest times of democracy,” and, “No matter how many films are made to glorify a failed leader, the reality remains unchanged.”

However, none of these posts or statements have appeared on Deepika’s verified social media account. The screenshot itself also shows signs of digital manipulation, and multiple reports state that no such story was ever published.
History of fake posts targeting Deepika Padukone
The claim came at a time when several leading Bollywood actors, including Deepika, Alia Bhatt, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, had not publicly commented on Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike, leading some users to find the fake post more credible.
This is not the first time that Deepika has been targeted through fabricated social media content. In March this year, another fake screenshot falsely claimed that she had posted a review of Ranveer Singh Dhurandhar: Revenge. The image circulated widely despite there being no record of such a post.
Deepika has been finding herself at the center of political conversations in the past as well. In January 2020, he visited Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after masked attackers attacked students and teachers on the campus. Although she stood in solidarity with the protesting students, she neither addressed the gathering nor issued any public statement. The visit drew sharp political reactions amid the release of his film. Splash.
Celebs gathered in support of Sonam Wangchuk
Although many prominent Bollywood celebrities have remained silent on Wangchuk’s ongoing fast, some members of the film industry have expressed support.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared a series of Instagram Stories describing Wangchuk as “brave” and saying that he did not have the courage to protest like this. In another post he said that the ongoing silence on the issue has reached a point where remaining silent feels shameful.
Actors Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Zeenat Aman, Abhay Deol, Omi Vaidya and singer Kaka have also publicly supported Wangchuk.
Wangchuk is currently on the 19th day of his hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where he joined the Cockroach Janata Party’s protest over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. The protesters are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Amid growing concerns over Wangchuk’s health, a petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking permission to force-feed him, warning that he could die within two days if the fast continues.
