Two people were arrested on Wednesday afternoon after allegedly climbing to the top of New York City’s Empire State Building without safety equipment, unfurling a banner and engaging in a stunt.The New York Police Department identified the pair as 32-year-old Ivan Kuznetsov and 33-year-old Angelina Nikolaou. Kuznetsov’s social media profiles identify him as Ivan Bierkus. The duo, who live in East Orange, New Jersey, are known for climbing skyscrapers and other tall structures without ropes or protective gear.According to law enforcement sources cited by CBS News, the pair have been charged with theft, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, violation of local law, possession of burglar’s tools, criminal tampering, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.The incident occurred around noon, when the man and woman, both wearing masks, climbed to the spire at the top of the Empire State Building. They appeared to have no visible safety equipment and appeared to be clinging to the structure, displaying a large black banner with white letters.The banner read, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world knows peace.”This quote is often attributed to American-guitarist Jimi Hendrix.According to preliminary information shared by law enforcement sources with CBS News, investigators believe the pair reached the summit through a hatch on the 103rd floor of the building, which is normally used for water tower maintenance.Authorities also said the pair appeared to be engaged during the climb before being taken into custody.
