Children are suffocating: Deepika urges BMC to tackle Mumbai’s worrying AQI levels

Deepika Padukone has approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to highlight the deteriorating air quality in Mumbai. In a social media post, he expressed his concern as the city grapples with prolonged heat and poor air conditions, which is affecting residents of all age groups, including children.

Padukone posted a picture on her Instagram story showing the city smog and tagged BMC and BMC Public Health Department. In his message, he wrote, “This city (and its children) is suffocating! How is this okay? @bmc @mybmchealth help! (sic)” followed by a folded hands emoji.

In January 2026, the BMC told the Bombay High Court that a total of 1,954 construction projects are currently underway across Mumbai, and large-scale enforcement action is being taken against sites violating air pollution norms.

The civic body said stop-work notices are being issued to construction sites that failed to install sensor-based air quality monitors after January 15, 2026. After the stipulated compliance period, notices were issued to about 662 non-compliant sites for failure to comply with the instructions and guidelines set by the court.

On the professional front, Padukone will star in Shah Rukh Khan’s film KingScheduled to release in December 2026. The cast also features Suhana Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Raghav Juyal, Abhay Verma, Abhishek Bachchan and Saurabh Shukla. She is also working on Atlee’s directorial project AA22XA6 Starring Allu Arjun, the official title is expected to be revealed in April 2026.
