OpenAI is busy giving more powers to its chatbot ChatGPT. This generative AI chatbot currently allows users to answer questions, generate codes, etc. by taking text or image prompts. However, now, further enhancing its capabilities, OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT will now have the ability to process videos and interact with users regarding real-time visual inputs.

OpenAI introduced this new feature of ChatGPT during a live-stream event. OpenAI announced that ChatGPIT will now be able to recognize objects through a smartphone’s camera and provide insights based on what it sees, similar to the way we get information by pointing the camera at Google Lens or more recently. As for availability, the rollout of this feature will begin this week with paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro customers. The feature is expected to be available in January 2025 for enterprise and educational users, as part of OpenAI’s strategy to integrate advanced AI capabilities across various sectors.

Reportedly, the announcement of video capabilities is part of a 12-day series of product launches from OpenAI. These include the introduction of a premium ChatGPT Pro subscription and the introduction of an AI video generation tool called Sora. The collective goal of these developments is to create a comprehensive suite of AI tools that meet both individual and organizational needs.

Earlier in October, OpenAI launched Sora Turbo, a new AI tool designed to transform text prompts into highly realistic videos. Initially introduced as a limited research preview in February, OpenAI has now made Sora Turbo widely accessible to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. The tool allows customers to create videos up to 20 seconds long with resolutions reaching 1080p and formats including widescreen, vertical and square.

Sora Turbo offers users many customization options, enabling them to create, remix, and refine videos using individual assets or entirely new ideas. It also includes a storyboard interface that lets users define frame-by-frame details with precision, while a community showcase allows users to explore trending creations through a curated feed.

However, the rollout is currently limited geographically. Right now, Sora Turbo is not available in regions like the EU, UK, and Switzerland and is restricted to users aged 18 and above. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can create up to 50 videos per month at 480p resolution, while Pro users enjoy expanded capabilities including higher resolution and larger production limits. OpenAI plans to introduce flexible pricing models next year to meet different user needs.
