The Valentine’s Day weekend will see two new releases: O’Romeo, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor, and the creature-horror-love story Tu Ya Main, starring Shanaya Kapoor. Of the two, O’Romeo is clearly the bigger film in terms of scale and cost, although neither seems to be getting a head start. Valentine’s Day is not a holiday, but it is a earning day for the box office. It would have been better if the increase had been on a Friday, but it will be on a Saturday, which is the weekend anyway, although with Valentine’s Day, the weekend increase will be higher than usual.
‘O’ Romeo’ is the fourth film of Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid Kapoor. The director’s box office track record is disappointing, but two out of three films with Shahid have done well. Having said that, the outlook on this one doesn’t seem that promising, as the music and trailer aren’t making an impact. It appears in advance, which is quite low. At the time of writing, the film has sold over 15 thousand tickets across the national chains on the first day, and the final number is likely to be around 25 thousand. It will be more than Deva’s 18K but less than Teri Baton Main Uljha Jiya’s 33K.
Making things difficult is the fact that the film is very expensive, costing Rs. 100 crores for production and release. Non-theatrical recoveries are good at face value, but leave a lot to be desired for theatrics, and since things don’t seem to be coming in early, it will be highly dependent on reports being positive and then building on them.
Tu Ya Main had an interesting teaser, but it hasn’t been taken much further since then. Hit music could help. The advance amount is almost nothing, so far around 1K tickets have been sold across the national chains. Hopefully the reception will be positive, and if so, it could well increase on Saturday and then continue from there.
