However, it seems that Apple is not just limited to SOS and aims to make its iPhone a true satellite device to assist in all kinds of emergencies. In line with this goal, the Cupertino tech giant announced “Messages via Satellite” with iOS 18 at WWDC 2024. This new feature will enable iPhone users to send messages even without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

This new feature of messaging via satellite in iOS 18 uses the same advanced technology as Apple’s existing satellite capabilities. When users are in an area without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, their iPhone will prompt them to connect to the nearest satellite via the Messages app. This feature will enable them to send and receive texts, emojis, and tapbacks on both iMessage and SMS, ensuring constant connectivity regardless of location.

Interestingly, to make this feature more user-friendly and interactive, Apple has integrated Dynamic Island with the new Messages Via Satellite feature. With Dynamic Island, Apple will provide real-time updates on the status of the satellite connection, ensuring that users are always aware of their connectivity, whether they are in remote locations or at sea. Additionally, Apple ensures that iMessages sent via satellite will be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring user privacy and security.

Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite

Meanwhile, Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite is currently available on the iPhone 14, 14 Pro, 15, and 15 Pro models. Since its launch, the feature has proven to be a lifesaver for communicating in emergency situations. Currently, this SOS connectivity feature is available in 16 countries including the US, Canada, and several European countries. To use Emergency SOS via Satellite, users need an iPhone with iOS 16.1 or later and a clear line of sky to connect to the satellite. When activated, it helps users communicate with emergency services by providing essential information such as location, Medical ID, and answers to emergency questionnaires.

Apple has also introduced Roadside Assistance via Satellite, which connects users to AAA for car trouble in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. This added feature reflects Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance user safety and convenience in challenging situations. Additionally, the Find My app now allows users to share their location via satellite, giving friends and family peace of mind when traveling off the grid. The Check In feature can also automatically notify contacts when the user has safely arrived at their destination. All of these features collectively make the iPhone a reliable device even when not connected to the Internet.
