Director Anurag Kashyap recently opened up about going out of Mumbai as Bollywood was avoiding him for time. He revealed that he was able to drink and treat depression after shifting to South Cinema.

Kashyap, in an interview Sudhir SrinivasanFor my YouTube channel, “I have gone into a depression. I have come out of it. I am enjoying myself now. One thing I did, I stopped watching Hindi films. I started watching a lot of films from filmmakers for the first time, I started watching a lot of Malayalam films.”

He said, “Hindi filmmakers have been escaping from me, because they feel that I am bad, because they think I do not have a filter and I talk. They think that if they join me, they can’t meet (to work with), some studio or someone else will be harassed.

Referring to the love received in the south compared to Mumbai, Kashyap further said, “Why am I in a place where I am being told that people are talking about your alcohol, people are talking about your depression, people are saying that you are losing their way. They are trying to be my savior and tell me what I should do to save myself.”

He said, “I don’t have to deal with people. Acutely, I started exercising. Automally, I started writing,” he said. Anurag Kashyap’s last dramatic release as a director was Dobra (2022). He also shown in the Malayalam film ‘Rifle Club’ (2024).

Kashyap’s next release ‘Nishchi’ is a crime-thriller. The teaser of the film was recently released. The film has Aishwari Thackeray’s debut. It also includes Vedika Pinto, Monica Panwar, Mohammad Zeeshan Job and Kumud Mishra among the decisive characters.

‘Nishchi’ is scheduled to release in theaters on September 19, 2025.
