Actor Jisshu Sengupta has made his career playing a variety of characters in Bengali cinema, Hindi films and web series. While audiences have often seen him play complex and morally ambiguous roles, the actor says his approach to choosing characters comes from the lessons he learned from late acclaimed filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh.

had an exclusive conversation with India TodayJisoo reflected on his journey as an actor and explained why he was never inspired by the idea of being a traditional hero. “I believe I am an actor. One question really changed my whole perspective about choosing characters. I have worked with Rituparno Ghosh in many films. He asked me, ‘What do you want to be? Do you want to be a hero who is an actor, or an actor who is a hero?’ I said, ‘I want to be an actor who’s a hero,'” he said.

The actor admitted that his response came spontaneously at the time, but Ghosh’s response left a lasting impression on him. “My understanding was that people would say, ‘What kind of an actor is he.’ So, I said it by default. What he explained to me was that as an actor, you can play the hero, you can play the villain, you can even play a character. And that will help you choose the script,” he said.

Jishu said that the conversation fundamentally changed the way roles were evaluated. “So, after that day, and I can’t go into detail about what he said, it was a long conversation we had. But the basic thing was that he said you should become an actor, but why? Because it could be a scene in the film or it could be the entire film, it could be the hero or a gray character, whatever you are playing. if that Character To script get out ofDoes the script end, does the story end there, or is it still ongoing? If all this is going on even without that character, then there is no point in playing that character. But if you remove the characters from the story and the story becomes incomplete, then you should do those characters,” he explained.

The advice often led him to move away from the limitations associated with the traditional leading role and explore a wider range of repertoire. He said, “From that day onwards, even in Bengal, if I used to do hero and all the other roles, I started doing villain roles. I also started doing character roles, which I enjoy a lot.”

Jisshu believes that playing unconventional characters has given him the opportunity to explore dimensions of acting that straight-laced hero roles do not often offer. He said, “And I have understood one thing: being a hero, you can’t fully explore an actor. Because as a hero, you have to be good, you have to do certain things that are sacred as a hero. But as a character, you get to experience a lot. As an actor, you experience a lot by playing a gray character. And I believe that as human beings, we are all grey.”

He further acknowledged that the definition of a hero has evolved significantly over the years. He said, “When I’m playing a hero nowadays, perhaps the examples of heroes have changed. There are gray characters that we call anti-heroes. It existed earlier too, but in the era I’m talking about, it was limited. Nowadays, it’s different.”

He concluded, “So, I always wanted to be an actor. And here I am. It’s not about choosing a gray character or a positive character or anything like that. I love playing a character that is very important to the story. So, yes, that’s how I chose it.”
