Filmmaker Anik Dutta died on Wednesday after allegedly falling from the roof of a residential building in Kolkata’s Hindustan Park area. In a critical condition, he was taken to a private hospital in Dhakuria, where doctors declared him dead. Gariahat police station is investigating the incident.
According to sources, a suicide note has allegedly been recovered from the roof of the apartment building. Police said the director was suffering from depression for a long time and was also taking medication for anxiety. Officials said Anik Dutta had visited his estranged wife’s residence in Hindustan Park on Wednesday, though it is still not clear what exactly happened before the collapse.

He was found in a blood-soaked condition outside the four-storey building with serious injuries on his head, waist, arms and legs. Doctors reportedly said that he had died before reaching the hospital. Police currently believe it to be a case of suicide, although investigation is ongoing.
Last year, reports of problems in Dutta’s personal life came to light. After almost 25 years of marriage, the director and his wife Sandhi Dutta have reportedly separated and are going through divorce proceedings. Anik Dutta was living alone in his Gariahat apartment, while his wife lived separately in Hindustan Park, Kolkata.
The filmmaker was reportedly seriously ill a few months ago as well and was admitted to the hospital due to heart complications. Sources said that marital issues were still going on at that time, although Dutta had decided not to talk publicly about the reasons behind the separation.
Known for his sharp satire and unconventional storytelling, Anik Dutta carved a niche for himself in Bengali cinema.
