Cultural representation in the creative field is a heavy responsibility, not one that many creators cannot put shoulders. The 2022 blockbuster ‘Kantara’ re -presented the impact of the culturally rich story on the audience. But as a collateral damage, it paved the way for manufacturers to redeem this trend, which is average and far from authentic.

‘Shodha’ is a Kannada mini-series with six episodes on the Zee5, each is about 20 minutes long. Directed by Sunil Mysuru, this Hindi series is a remake of ‘Khoja – USS Paar’, which is input from Suhas Navrathana and input from actor -director Pawan Kumar. Did the director of acclaimed films like ‘Lucia’ and ‘U-Turns help make this thriller attractive? Let’s know.

A famous lawyer, Rohit (Pawan Kumar), returns home to Madikeri to disappear his wife Meera. He files a police complaint with Inspector Bhairav (Arun Sagar). Along with her sister -in -law Aditi (Anusha Ranganath), she also meets her daughter Tara, who lives in a residential school. On his way, Rohit meets with an accident.

In the hospital, Bhairav, Aditi and a third person are present. When Rohit asks who she is, she introduces herself as Meera (Siri Ravikumar), leaves her because she insists that she is not his wife. So who is Meera? Has Rohit lost his memory? Why does he remember everyone other than that? And is it more than that of the eye in this case? The series provides shallow answers to these complicated questions.

‘Shoda’ examines many topics, such as depression, belief, loyalty, love for someone’s children and complexities that come with them. The thriller chain, although flaws, set itself well in the initial episode, with some scenes that are really attractive.

However, the screenplay structure of this series appears to be a mixture of traditional Kannada soap opera and symptoms from the modern-day web series, but not a good. Manufacturers, writers, directors and script doctors have tried to create a story, which may look wise on paper, but in execution, surface-level mediation. ‘Shoda’ is a lost reason with a shallow script, old direction, luxurious performance and a twist from one mile away.

Pawan Kumar has invested a lot in his role, and shows his efforts in the series. While his performance is better than his previous acting giggs, it is still low. The direction and execution do not help, because no attempt is made to elevate the character through technical means. Even strong artists like Siri Ravikumar and Arun Sagar have little scope to shine, while Anusha Ranganath’s performance becomes flat and fails to implement any response.

Cinematographer Rahul Roy shows more skills in catching landscape than emotions. Arjun Ramu’s music is best, only working in brief moments. Editing, however, is the greatest miss, as the show had sharp cuts and scope to be more attractive with strong clifhengars. Editor Anil Anirudh should have seen it on the edit table, but was an attempt to improve it? It seems, no.

While cultural references are used to leave the signal about the ongoing proceedings in the main timeline, they do not make any meaning. There is a big difference between taking inspiration from culture and using it – in the way of most deficiency – only for glitz. ‘Kantara’ comes under the first bracket, while ‘Shoda’ sinks into the second.

Overall, ‘Shoda’ seems to be like the rethinking of the average thriller already in a separate language, combining cultural specificity and pinch of quirks. Still, making it is so lazy that watching this minisariies or scrolling through reels on Instagram leaves you with the same spirit – which is a waste of time. ‘Shoda’ proves that cultural glow cannot cover a weak story.
