6 killed as Russia fires missiles, drones at Ukraine; Kiev renews plea for air defense

At least six people were killed and dozens injured after Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on Saturday, according to Ukrainian officials. Kiev reiterated its call for immediate supplies of air defense systems and said a growing shortage of interceptor missiles left it vulnerable to Russian attacks. The attacks targeted several cities, including Sumy, Odessa, Kharkiv and Kiev, while Ukraine claimed to intercept most of the incoming drones and cruise missiles, but said it was unable to stop ballistic missile attacks due to its dwindling stockpile of Patriot missiles.Ukrainian officials said the deadliest attack occurred in the northern city of Sumy, where two Russian glide bombs struck a crowded area, killing four people and wounding 17 others.According to Reuters, a bomb fell on a bus stop. Photos released by authorities showed a yellow bus being torn into pieces by the explosion.Earlier in the day, a missile attack on the southern port city of Odessa killed two people and injured another, while a Russian drone attack on a civilian enterprise in Kharkiv injured seven people. In Kiev, 11 people were injured after overnight attacks by ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones. Responding to the attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that civilian areas were attacked before an airstrike warning was issued.“Civilian infrastructure was attacked even before the airstrike warning was issued,” Zelensky said, adding, “Our defenders managed to shoot down most of the targets, but not the ballistics.”He urged Ukraine’s allies to quickly deliver air defense packages agreed at this week’s NATO summit.Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched six ballistic missiles, six cruise missiles and 121 drones overnight before subsequent attacks on Odessa, Kharkiv and Sumy.It said air defense units intercepted 111 drones and at least two cruise missiles.Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that the country has a serious shortage of munitions for US-made Patriot air defense systems, making it more vulnerable to ballistic missile attacks. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump this week said Ukraine would get a license to produce Patriot interceptor missiles domestically. After Saturday’s attacks, Zelensky said those plans should move forward “as quickly as possible.”As Russia stepped up airstrikes, Ukraine said it continued to target Russian military logistics in occupied southern Ukraine.Meanwhile, Russian officials said one person was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike targeting four ships, including a methanol tanker, in Taganrog Bay on the Sea of Azov. Authorities also reported fires at two fuel depots and the port of Taganrog following drone attacks on Friday, Reuters cited.
