You’re not the most skilled person: Visa officer asks Indian man why his company is sending him to New York on a business trip

The Redditor says that before denying the B1/B12 visa, the visa officer told him that his answer seemed to be memorized.

An Indian man shared his recent B1/B2 visa denial experience on Reddit as he asked for advice on how long he should wait before reapplying. But details of the interview revealed how harshly he was interrogated by the visa officer, who did not believe his reason for seeking a business visa to the US. The 27-year-old man said it was his first visa application. He has been working at their company for four years and now his employer is sponsoring a short business trip to New York for an offsite and business review. The visa officer asked him twice the purpose of his visit, the Redditor said. “It’s a short business trip to attend team offsite and client business review meetings,” the man repeated the same answer twice as he realized he was not being heard the first time. After repeating the answer, the visa officer became angry and said: “I know this is a short business trip. It seems you have missed it.”The visa officer said to the applicant, “You can’t explain to me why your company is sending you away? You don’t seem like the nicest person.” The Redditor said he then explained to her that he works directly with customers, participates in business review meetings, etc.But ultimately he was handed a 214(B) denial letter.Redditors commented that it was clear from the interview that the visa officer was not sure about the purpose of his visit. And once the visa officer said the answer seemed to be memorized, it was game over, he said. “The officer’s ‘missing the ear’ comment is probably the real story here, more than relationships or salary. Once an officer says it out loud, he or she has already decided that you’re reading a script rather than actually responding, and everything becomes damage control after that. There’s no more preparation to re-enact the improvisation, it’s less, answer in your own words, even if it’s messy, pausing and repeating sounds more real than a clean rehearsed line. Relationship and salary questions are usually just standard follow up, don’t think they were the trigger here,” one wrote.Others pointed out that his answers were really bad and he even said in his Reddit post that he was desperate to enter the US. The man said that one of his colleagues had given the same answer but his visa was approved and he wanted to go to America because it would bring more business and more bonuses.
