Aisha Tyler recalls her time with Matthew Perry

“When I auditioned for Friends, I had watched every episode of Friends — like every single episode, which didn’t make me feel confident. It just made me feel like, I know how to tell a Friends joke. But, am I going to be able to tell it well?” Aisha Tyler revealed during the podcast.

Auditioning with David Schwimmer for the role of Ross’ girlfriend Charlie Wheeler was intimidating, although Schwimmer was great. When Tyler got the role, she was initially set to appear in four episodes, but ended up appearing in nine.

He described the experience as being like theater. Tyler explained. “At the end, it’s just like theater, you do a curtain call, then everybody bows, you’re waiting in the wings, and they introduce the guest stars, and then they introduce the main cast. So, I would be one of the last people to walk out before the main cast.”

He also shared a memorable moment with Matthew Perry from his first episode. Right before he headed out for his first taping, Perry told him, “Get ready for a change in your life.” Tyler found his words very kind and encouraging.

“It was such a lovely and generous thing to say, it wasn’t like, ‘Uh-oh.’ He was like, ‘This is exciting. This is going to be exciting for you.’ And I’ve never forgotten that moment because it really changed my life,” she said.
