2025 was an average year for Tamil cinema. As the year comes to an end, here is an analysis of the top 10 highest-grossing Tamil films. Kollywood’s biggest grossing film is Rajinikanth starrer Coolie, which grossed more than Rs. Earning Rs 500 crore at the worldwide box office. Nevertheless, the Thalaivar-Lokesh Kanagaraj film did not perform well and could not match its high pre-release buzz and hype.
Ajith Kumar had two releases this year – Vidamuyarchi and Good Bad Ugly. While the first film did not strike a chord with the audience, the second emerged as a huge success. Apart from Coolie and Good Bad Ugly, no other star-studded film could perform well at the box office. Kamal Haasan starrer Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, proved to be a huge flop. Suriya’s Retro and Sivakarthikeyan’s Madharasi also recorded dull and average theatrical performances respectively.
Kollywood box office definitely missed Thalapathy Vijay, who had no releases in 2025. His last film, Jana Nayagan, is scheduled to hit the theaters on January 9, 2026, coinciding with the Pongal festival.
Apart from the biggies, some medium sized and small budget films also found audiences. Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dragon raised Rs. Earned more than. 100 crore mark worldwide, while Dude made around Rs. 86 crores. Thalaivan Thalaivi and Tourist Family were two surprises of Tamil cinema this year. Both these small-scale films not only impressed the audience but also earned well at the box office.
