Will Vijay Sethupathi star in Maharaja 2? The actor confirmed that director Nithilan Saminathan has completed the script

Vijay Sethupathi starrer Maharaja was released in theaters in 2024 and became a huge success at the box office. Now, it appears that the film may be getting a sequel, with Vijay Sethupathi once again leading the project.

Vijay Sethupathi to star in Maharaja sequel?

Speaking to Galatta Plus, Vijay Sethupathi said, “Director Nithilan Saminathan has completed the script of Maharaja 2. I am excited to hear it soon.”

For those unaware, Maharaja is the story of a barber in Chennai who reports the theft of his steel dustbin, “Lakshmi”, to the police. The police initially dismissed him due to his bizarre complaint. However, he later realizes that the complaint is a ruse to hunt down three criminals who broke into his house and brutally attacked his daughter while he was away.

How the father takes revenge on his daughter’s attackers, and whether justice is ultimately served forms the crux of the story.

Vijay Sethupathi led the project, which featured Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natti Subramaniam, Abhirami, Divya Bharathi, Singampuli, Aruldoss, Munishkanth and others in lead roles. The film is currently available for streaming on Netflix.

Furthermore, during the same conversation, Vijay Sethupathi also talked about his upcoming ventures with director Mani Ratnam and Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Pocket Novel. The actor said, “Mani Ratnam sir is very sharp. I told him, ‘Whenever I get a gap, I will come sir. I will read the script with you and try to understand it.’ We have to stick with him to perform well.”

Vijay said, “Working with Thiagarajan Kumararajah brings a different kind of comfort and responsibility. I am very happy with him. His sense of responsibility is infectious. So I told my team that we need to be extra careful for the next four months. The film is progressing brilliantly.”

Vijay Sethupathi’s work front

Vijay Sethupathi will next be seen in the lead role in Slum Dog: 33 Temple Road. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, the action film will star Samyuktha and Tabu in co-lead roles.

Additionally, he will star in a web series titled Muthu Angira Kattan (or simply Kattan), which is scheduled to start streaming on JioHotstar from March 27, 2026.

Apart from this, he is also working on the film Pocket Novel. The upcoming project, directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, marks the second collaboration of the director and actor after Super Deluxe and stars Malavika Mohanan and Raj B Shetty as the co-leads.
