His reply shared during a recent interview with Bloomberg in San Francisco is a reassuring – at least for now. Instead of cutting jobs, Pichai stated that AI is helping Google’s engineers to become more productive by handling the tasks to be repeated. “I hope we will grow next year from our current engineering phase, as it allows us to do more,” he said. According to him, AI is not replacing people – it is accelerating development and allowing teams to create new products faster.

Pichai referred to AI as a “accelerator”, not a replacement. He admitted that some concerns about job loss are valid, especially after the recent comments by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodi, who predicted that AI could change half the white-collar jobs of the entry level within five years. “I respect that … I think it is important to give voice to those concerns and debate them,” Pichai said.

Google has cut jobs in recent months. Its global trade unit ended about 200 roles, which handles partnerships and sales. In early 2023, the alphabet also placed 12,000 employees, which is about 6 percent of its workforce. Nevertheless, until December 2024, Google has still appointed over 183,000 people.

Stress is being felt between AI progress and job stability in the technical industry. In a separate event earlier this week, Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich also addressed the future of AI in software development. Speaking at a technology coalition startup and investor program, Rosinovich warned against considering the AI ​​coding equipment, replacing experienced developers soon. Rasinovich has predicted that even in five years, AI will not freeze sophisticated software independently from beginning to end.
