Why is Siara Winning Dil (and Box Office)?

A continuous chasing virality in a world, ‘Siara’ chooses vulnerability. It does not offer a spectacle – it provides honesty. And if you are still wondering why this is working, then you probably don’t know here.

In short

  • ‘Siara’ earns more than Rs 100 crore in four days, rare for debutants film
  • No star power or publicity, yet the film wins the heart amidst the dominance of Oat
  • It is here that it has found its audience in the younger generation

‘Siara’ has collected more than Rs 100 crore in just four days – unprecedented for a film in the first film in India. Its popularity, increasing continuously since the day, is not limited to the box office reaction. YRF Biggie has taken memes, reel, discussion, debate and on the internet with that one question: why is it working?

And honestly, this is a reasonable question.

In a country where the theater has become a secondary medium of entertainment after OTT, a film with no fresh face, no star bridge, no preacher Blitz has caught the hearts of the audience in an unimaginable way. Most of the dramatic release was being left, right and center – and then ‘Sera’ came together and conquered everyone. But, again, why?

You can’t predict public, what you can do?

It is important to understand what works for the audience, there is no definite formula to determine. Anyone who claims that otherwise is either lying or has no meaning in creative business – especially when it comes to cinema. You can’t just predict public mood. There is no correct answer to why a film click on the box office while another flop.

Sometimes, it is about the collective feeling of the country – such as ‘Pathan’, where the audience held a rally after the audience arrested his son Aryan in a drug -related case. Sometimes, it is an expectation built on heritage – such as ‘Pushpa: The Rule’, riding on pure love for the franchise.

But, ‘Sera’? Truth is told, it does not give anything new other than its fresh faces. The love story is the classic Mohit Suri – a passionate, emotionally charged, where the leads wear their hearts on their sleeves and are ready to take the world. The film shows the romance of the old school and does not even claim to redefine love. Then what is it? Is the audience a herd in theaters, expressing its feelings so vigorously, and almost unexpectedly joins the screen?

Why did Siara’s magic answer, Sanam Teri Kasam worked

Perhaps the answer was perhaps earlier this year by ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ to be surprisingly successful. He worked like magic in theaters – available on the film – YouTube – in theaters. And ‘Siara’ is establishing the same trend… again.

The film has the right place. It talks about the feelings that are timeless but still do not fully understand. You see, when it comes to matters of love, no matter how intelligent or experience it is, no one can claim to understand it completely. The love process is as complex as it is to feel. But, in generations, cultures and languages, a truth remains: When you fall in love, you do it with you, and you are all. ‘Sera’ bowed into that truth.

It tells a familiar story in a language that we all understand – music. ‘Sera’s music is its soul. Mohit Suri spent almost five years, gathering these tunes, forming a world where every note seems like a line of poetry written in calligraphy.

Some mysterious, some magical

Even the trailer and promo kept things mysterious. Who were these two? How did they fall in love? Did they break them so deeply? Did they ever meet again? Did one of them die? The wind of curiosity pulled the audience. And when an emerging singer, and Vani Batra, the story of a shy lyricist, came out on the big screen, it broke the Internet and the box office alike.

‘Sera’ directly talks to this generation. This reflects their disillusionment, their buried trauma and their discovery for the meaning in a very-cure world. The farmer wants to make it bigger in the manner of the old school, while the world ticks blue on real talent. Wani just wants to be quietly present at an age which affects vigorously. Their parents are trying – honestly and strangely – they no longer understand to protect them from such a world to help them shine. All this is worthy of shocking.

General Z finds his love story

The biggest victory of ‘Siara’s’ is: it has brought an entire generation back to theaters – a generation of contents of more comfortable viewing (and making) on their phone and iPad. For them, going to a theater is an old idea, which is reserved for family outings or Marvel finals. And yet, he showed. Not because of publicity, but perhaps because he felt something.

They say that love is a universal language – perhaps they also mean that it is a generation. The Hindi film industry has spent years, churning romantic-lying, romantic-actions, romantic-thriller-everyone in the name of love. But ‘Siarra’, despite its familiar trops, revives a style that has been missing from a large screen for a very long time. And history tells us that when Bollywood actually invests in a soul-graceful love story, magic happens.

A pure love story? Yes, please

From ‘Aashiqui’ to ‘Ashiki 2’, ‘Rockstar’ to ‘Kabir Singh’, ‘Veer-Zara’ to ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’, Hindi cinema has consistently hit gold when it taps in the pain of eternal, unwavering love. ‘Sera’ trades the same route, but brings some magical music, grounded settings and characters that feel real. They do not romance in Swiss valleys or flaunt the world’s gucci and doors. They are not fighting demons or chasing world domination. They are just two people who are trying to heal, love, survive – and may, create something together.

You do not need to prepare yourself to see ‘Sera’. There is no need to know the stories of character arcs or past. You just walk, walk together, feel something, and when you come in, you become a little more emotional. It is entertainment, yes, but it is also comfortable and therefore, on a large scale.

And perhaps this is the reason why ‘Sera’ is working.

Promotion, but heart too

It does not shout for meditation. It does not make very difficult efforts to strengthen the wheel. It only reminds the audience of the type of cinema that once loved him with love. At a time when every film suffers from being clever, loud, viral or franchise-worthy, ‘Siara’ is just honest.

This does not pretend, no big statement – just two people, their feelings, and tunes that stitch them together. It is like the cinematic counterpart of a long -time forgotten love letter: timeless, comfortable and depth individual. In the noise of everything else, perhaps the whisper of a film that manages to reach the largest corner of the audience.

So why is Siara working? Perhaps the real question is – why it won’t be?

– Ends
