Why did Birkin in the hand of Yahya Sinwar’s wife become headlines all over the world?

The Birkin, the world’s most iconic bag, has found itself at the center of an Israel-Hamas war of words after being spotted in the hands of the wife of slain Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar.

Yahya Sinwar’s wife was spotted carrying a bag that looks like a super-luxurious Hermes Birkin.

One of the most fascinating offerings from the luxury world, the Hermès Birkin, is once again in the news. But this time, it’s not about being sued by frustrated buyers over how hard it is to buy, nor is it about yet another rare addition to Kim Kardashian’s ever-growing collection. Instead, the world’s most iconic bag has found itself at the center of an Israel-Hamas war after being spotted in the hands of the wife of slain Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar.

The Israeli military recently released footage from the night before the Gaza-based terrorist group launched its deadly attack on Israel on October 7 last year, which showed Yahya Sinwar and his family. The video shows Sinwar walking into an underground tunnel with his wife and children. Meanwhile, Sinwar’s wife’s bag attracted a lot of attention when Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Avichay Adrai said in a tweet that she was carrying a Birkin worth US$32,000 (approximately Rs 27 lakh).

“Although Gaza residents have no money for food, we see many examples of Yahya Sinwar and his wife’s special love for money,” Adrai tweeted in Arabic, including a photo of Sinwar’s wife. The Birkin bag was visible.

what’s the big deal?

One might wonder what’s the big deal—it’s just a bag, right? Wrong. Anyone familiar with the world of luxury knows that the Birkin is far from just a bag. You can have all the money in the world and still not be able to buy yourself a Birkin. You certainly can’t walk into an Hermès boutique and walk out with a bag of your choice (forget the Birkin).

This is a long, notorious (but unwritten) process that goes beyond high demand and controlled supply. In the past, there used to be a waiting list, but that is now a thing of the past. Even if the bag is in stock and you have all the money in the world, it may still be out of reach. Think of it as the Rolls-Royce of the luxury bag world.

To buy a Birkin you first have to climb the status ladder and build a relationship with the brand before you even get the chance to buy one. This relationship-building often means owning other Hermès products before being eligible to purchase the coveted bag, which requires spending similar amounts of money on items other than the bag.

Additionally, luxury fashion insiders say, your relationship with your Hermès Sales Associate (SA) plays a significant role in determining your eligibility to own a Birkin. It’s not the most coveted bag in the world for no reason. Of course, the meticulous craftsmanship and its prestigious history are also major factors.

As a brand, Hermès dates back to 1837. The French luxury fashion house, known for leather goods and lifestyle accessories, has originally been family-controlled.

“It’s not a bag. It’s a Birkin.”

The Birkin bag came to life in 1984 after Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas heard the late actress and singer Jane Birkin lamenting over the difficulty of finding a practical leather bag during a flight from Paris to London. The incident occurred when the contents of her straw basket fell on the floor. The conversation led to Dumas creating a black, supple leather bag for her, later known as the Birkin bag – a roomy creation that looked elegant but could fit everything she needed.

Over the years, the Birkin became the ultimate symbol of wealth and exclusivity. It didn’t immediately gain popularity or immediately achieve the status of ‘hardest to buy’ bag. In fact, the Birkin didn’t become an ‘it bag’ until the 1990s.

Its popularity increased at the turn of the century when an episode of sex and the City Samantha’s quest to obtain Birkin was featured, which included being placed on a five-year waiting list. Then came the iconic line, “It’s not a bag.” This is a Birkin,” was born, fueling a craze for the bag and making it one of the most sought-after luxury items in the world. Currently prices range from Rs 8 lakh to around Rs 4 crore.

In India, proud Birkin owners include Nita Ambani, who owns some of the most expensive and rare variants like the Himalaya Birkin and the Neige Snow Faubourg Birkin.

A Birkin bag takes expert craftsmen at least 18 hours to create and is marked with a code that identifies its year of manufacture, the workshop in which it was produced and the artisan who created it. These bags are made using only high quality materials, including leather and exotic skin such as crocodile, ostrich and crocodile.

Leather critics such as YouTuber Volkan Yilmaz (known as Tanner Leatherstein), who reconstructs luxury bags to judge their quality, also praise Hermès products. Yilmaz has criticized brands such as Louis Vuitton and Prada for their questionable quality, but he holds Hermès in high regard.

“I’m a big fan of Hermès because they have great respect for the natural leather that is still found and create these beautiful, balanced leathers that are natural yet preserved for use in fashion. I think the flavor of their leather is great for most leathers. And they still use time-honored techniques like saddle stitching and handicraft practices, which is unheard of in any other luxury brand,” Yilmaz points out. India Today In an exclusive interview earlier this year.

For those who can’t purchase a Birkin directly from Hermès, there’s always the resale market. Trusted resellers and second-hand purchases are common, as the market for Birkins is so large. Many see it as a financial investment, with several reports suggesting that Birkin could deliver better returns than gold.

How a Birkin ended up in the hands of the Hamas chief’s wife, despite the difficult and opaque processes involved in obtaining it, may remain a mystery – just as we’ll never know how many Birkins Hermès produces a year.
