On Friday, Sangeeta Sornalingam, wife of Tamil actor and TVK chief Vijay, filed for divorce in the Chengalpattu family court. According to the petition, 48-year-old Sangeeta alleged that 51-year-old Vijay was involved in an extramarital affair with a female actor. Sangeeta and Vijay have been married for 27 years and have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Sasha.

The legal proceedings are based on specific provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which allows spouses to seek divorce on grounds such as adultery and cruelty.

Who is Sangeeta Sornalingam?

Sangeeta Sornalingam belongs to a London business family. She is the daughter of London-based businessman Sornalingam and belongs to the Sri Lankan Tamil community. After seeing Vijay in his 1996 film Poove Unakkaga, she went to Chennai to meet him.

Their relationship developed through frequent communication when Sangeeta was a student at the University of London. The couple married in August 1999, having ceremonies in both Christian and Hindu traditions, in the presence of Vijay’s fans.

Sangeeta reportedly lives in London, where she runs her family’s business.

Vijay and Sangeetha’s son, Jason Sanjay, appeared with his father in the 2009 film Vettaikaran and is set to debut as a director with Sigma. His daughter Divya Sasha shared screen space with Vijay in the 2016 film Theri and is also a famous badminton player.

About divorce case

According to the petition, Sangeeta alleged that Vijay was involved in an extramarital affair. Without disclosing the name of the female actor, the petition said that in 2021, Sangeeta learned of Vijay’s involvement, “in an adulterous relationship with an actress.”

It further claimed that despite Vijay’s assurance that he would end the relationship, it allegedly continued without any sign of remorse.

The petition also said that Vijay not only kept Sangeeta out of his social and professional life but also “continued to travel abroad with the said actress and attend public events.”

It alleged that the female actor often shared pictures of these outings on social media and Vijay “neither refuted nor objected to these posts, thereby tacitly endorsing them.” Sangeeta argued that such posts “are causing her and her children to be humiliated again and again.”

Additionally, the petition alleged that Vijay withdrew the facilities already available to Sangeeta and “imposed financial restrictions including curbing her free movement.”

Sangeeta further claimed that Vijay’s “persistent adulterous conduct and repeated social media controversies” in 2024 caused her severe mental trauma. He said that their marriage had effectively broken down and now existed only on paper. According to him, this relationship is beyond reconciliation and has brought him nothing but “mental anguish, humiliation, insult and suffering”.

These details, mentioned under sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, became the core of the grounds for divorce put forward by Sangeeta.
