Priyanka Chopra has opened up about the challenges of managing her acting career along with raising her daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, who was born via surrogacy in January 2022. Recalling her childhood, Chopra credits her parents for introducing her to their workplaces early, which helped her develop an understanding of her professional life. She said, “There are a lot of people around my daughter, but I feel guilty whenever I go to the sets. So, I asked her to come to me (on shoots). I was fortunate that my mother used to take me with her to hospitals and I used to play with her in the nurses’ station.”
Chopra also noted the importance of visiting her father at his workplace during her formative years. She recalled, “I used to go to my father’s office too, that’s one thing that really helped me understand what my mom and dad (Ashok Chopra) were doing when they were not with me and I used to go to school.”
The actor highlighted the benefits of including children in their parents’ professional environment, taking inspiration from his own upbringing as a means of promoting understanding and comfort. She continues to apply these lessons while raising Malti Marie with her husband Nick Jonas.
Chopra has acknowledged the significant support of her mother, Dr. Madhu Chopra, who plays an active role in her granddaughter’s life. Speaking about her mother’s involvement, Chopra said, “Malti is at home with my mom, which is really nice. My mom was telling me a story that when she went to work, when I was little, she would leave me with my grandmother and go to work feeling at peace. And I feel like she’s repaying the favor she did me, which is great.”
This continued support from her family has allowed Chopra to meet the demands of her career, while ensuring that her daughter received care and exposure from close relatives. Chopra indicated that this inter-generational support system provides reassurance when they need to be away for work.
