Nayanthara’s portrayal of Goddess Sita in the 2011 Tamil film Sri Rama Rajyam sparked one of the most significant controversies of her career. Her role as a Hindu goddess in the mythological drama faced intense opposition and opposition, especially from both the Tamil and Telugu film communities. The reaction was not limited to just the casting choice, but his personal life choices were also questioned.
The controversy surrounding Nayanthara’s role in Sri Rama Rajyam was raised in her Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale. In 2010, as news of her casting spread, some sections of the public, especially Hindu fringe groups, expressed outrage. The then secretary of Hindu Makkal Katchi, a political group in Tamil Nadu, was among the vocal critics. She famously commented that Nayanthara, due to her personal history – particularly her relationship with actor Prabhu Deva at the time – was not suitable to play the role of Goddess Sita.
He said, “The epic is based on the principle of ‘one man, one woman in life’ and Nayanthara has ruined this concept by stealing another woman’s husband. So she has no right to play the role of Goddess Sita. ” Regarding her alleged relationship with Prabhu Deva, who was already married to Lata at the time.
Despite immense opposition, Nayanthara faced the situation with grace and determination. He did not let the criticism deter his commitment to this role. In the documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, a member of the film’s team shared how the actor became completely immersed in the character of Sita, not only in terms of her performance but also in terms of her personal conduct during the shoot. ,
“There was strong opposition to playing her role (Sita) in that film. There was opposition in both Tamil and Telugu industries. They were against playing the role of Goddess Sita. She crossed everything to create that character. Shooting From the beginning till the end, she stayed in a non-vegetarian hotel, Taj Krishna, but she did not eat water from that hotel until we completed the shooting of the film, we used to bring vegetarian food for her from outside, “He said.
In 2010, Nayanthara had announced that Sri Ram Rajyam would be her last film. He had refused to sign any new film and had also rejected many big films citing marriage as the reason.
Her sudden retirement announcement came at the peak of her career, when she had completed the shooting of Sri Rama Rajyam and was at the forefront of South Indian cinema. Many speculated that her decision was influenced by her relationship with Prabhu Deva, which had already attracted widespread media attention at the time. However, Nayanthara kept her reasons private and her exit from the industry was as sudden as her rise.
Although she later returned to acting with Idhu Namma Aalu in 2014 after her breakup with Prabhu Deva, her retirement announcement remains one of the most talked-about moments in her career.
