WhatsApp is testing new group-member tags feature on Android: Here’s how it works
WhatsApp is testing a new feature that allows users to add personalized tags to group chats. This update is intended to improve clarity and organization in busy messaging groups.

If you’ve ever had trouble remembering who’s in a busy WhatsApp group, the messaging app may soon have a solution. WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new group-member tags feature that allows users to add small, personalized labels next to their names. The feature is currently only live for a handful of beta testers on Android, but it could soon become one of the most useful updates for communities, project teams, and social groups.
According to WABetaInfo, which first spotted the feature in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.17.42, users can now assign custom tags up to 30 characters long to their names within a specific group. These tags will make it easier for others to identify members’ roles, responsibilities, or simply their personality, for example, tags like “coach,” “project manager,” or “moderator.”

Unlike usernames or display names, these tags are completely optional and are controlled by the members themselves, not by group administrators. The goal is to add context without hierarchy, so whether you’re part of a sports club, workplace chat, or neighborhood group, you can define how you appear to others.
WABetaInfo states that users can create, edit, or delete their tags whenever they want. Tags have a limit of 30 characters, and they cannot contain special symbols, links, or checkmarks, a restriction presumably intended to keep things clean and avoid impersonation.
Each tag is specific to the group where it is created. In other words, your “Project Manager” label in one chat won’t be visible in another family or hobby group. However, as long as you log in with the same account, the tags will continue to appear even if you switch devices or reinstall WhatsApp.
Currently, the feature is limited to beta users, but it is expected to be introduced more widely once WhatsApp completes testing and ensures smooth synchronization across devices.
How to add or edit group-member tags
Adding tags is quite simple and does not require any administrator privileges. To try it out, open WhatsApp on your Android phone and go to the group chat where you want to add the label. From there go to the Group Info screen and tap your name in the members list. You will then see the option to add or edit your tag. Type the label of your choice, for example, “Designer”, “Captain”, or “Foodie”, and press Save. Once confirmed, your tag will immediately appear next to your name for all group members to see.
For now, the feature remains exclusive to the beta version, meaning only users who have signed up for WhatsApp’s beta testing program can experiment with it. That said, WhatsApp introduces new features in phases, so a wider launch on Android and later iOS may be just around the corner.
This update continues WhatsApp’s recent effort to make group communications more streamlined and personalized. From community and admin controls to now adding member tags, the app is focusing on helping users make sense of large, noisy group chats.
If you’re part of multiple WhatsApp groups where everyone talks together, this little label can make the difference between chaos and clarity.
