WATCH: Spanish MEP imitates Marilyn Monroe to sing ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. Genocide’ for Trump in parliament

Spanish MP Irene Moreno creates her own satirical rendition of Happy Birthday to Trump

Spanish Member of the European Parliament Irene Monteiro went viral after singing her sarcastic rendition of “Happy Birthday” to US President Donald Trump during a Middle East policy debate, ending with the line “Happy Birthday, Mr. Genocide.”Monteiro, the country’s former equality minister and representative of Spain’s leftist Podemos party, used her floor time to criticize EU foreign policy, confronting EU foreign policy chief Kaja Callas. At the conclusion of his remarks, Monteiro resorted to English to sing the tune, and drew immediate online comparisons to Marilyn Monroe’s famous 1962 birthday performance for President John F. Kennedy, but replaced the standard song with “Mr. Genocide”.Monteiro fiercely questions what Europe should celebrate in relation to the modern situation in the Middle East. He demanded to know whether the EU had actually prevented the catastrophe. He said, “Have we stopped the illegal aggression of the United States and Israel against Iran? Have we broken relations with Israel? Have we stopped the occupation of Lebanon? No, we cannot celebrate any of that.”Trump was targeted in a speech following a public celebration of his 80th birthday on Sunday, June 14. Monteiro mocked his birthday celebrations, calling them a “Roman Empire” style spectacle. The viral moment immediately sparked intense debate on social media. Supporters lauded it as a bold and necessary critique of international foreign policy. Critics dismissed the performance as empty political theater, pointing out that he delivered the speech to a largely empty parliamentary chamber.Callas did not respond verbally to the song, remaining focused on his notes during the performance.
