Vijay Sethupathi recently spoke about the challenges he faced while shooting for ‘Naanum Rowdy Thaan’ with Vignesh Shivan. The film was important for both of them. Recalling his two-decade-long career, Sethupathi said that differences with directors were common. He recalled that initially there were clashes between him and Shivan as their expectations did not match.

Sethupathi said, “After the first day of shooting for Naanum Rowdy Thaan, I called Vicky (Vignesh Shivan) and fought with him. I told him, ‘You are trying to teach me acting. You don’t understand me.’ After four days, Nayan (Thara) asked me what the problem was between you two. I told him that he was asking me to play Paandi in a more hip way.”

He said that it took them time to understand each other. Sethupathi said that Vishnu Vishal had advised him that playing the character of Paandi would not be easy. ‘When Vicky narrated the script, he was lovely. I was actually trying to imitate Vicky, but it took us time to understand each other. I think it was Vishnu Vishal who told me right away that it was not easy to play that character. If he cries, everyone should laugh. He is a nice guy, but a cheater. I did not understand the character for the first four days and I became very insecure during that time.’

Sethupathi praised Shivan and said that he is a special filmmaker and a new generation producer. ‘We cannot even touch a subject like ‘Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal’. Nobody understands it. If you trust him and go with him, he will create a lot of magic in you. In this way, a lot of experiences have made me what I am today.’

Currently, Sethupathi is receiving praises for his performance in ‘Maharaja’ directed by Nithilan Saminathan although the film has received mixed reviews.
