Vidya Balan recently paid a photographic tribute to legendary singer MS Subbulakshmi on the occasion of her 108th birth anniversary. Vidya collaborated with costume designer Anu Parthasarathy to recreate the iconic styles of the Nightingale of India.

The project, titled A Recreation of Iconic Style, is a photographic tribute to the legendary singer and Bharat Ratna awardee and is a testament to the enduring appeal of her aesthetic. The idea was sparked in a casual conversation between Vidya and Anu, when Vidya expressed her admiration for MS Subbulakshmi and her desire to play the legendary singer.

Vidya Balan said, “I love MS Subbulakshmi.” “When I was growing up, my mother would play Suprabhatam by her first thing in the morning. My every day begins with her voice even today. For me, MS Subbulakshmi is a spiritual experience. So, this has been a labour of love, and I feel honoured to be able to pay tribute to her in this way,” the actor added.

The Parineeta actress shared a video from the shoot on Instagram, along with an emotional note, in which she expressed her pride in paying photographic tribute to Subbulakshmi.

“This is a humble tribute from @anuparthasarathy and me to the Legend M.S. Subbulakshmi – The Original Style Icon, who very gracefully set an example of simplicity that only added to the charm of her melodious voice. This featurette showcases four saris that M.S.Amma wore and popularised between the 60s and 80s and is a portrayal of M.S.Amma’s concert persona. If the rich, vibrant and unique saris were one part of M.S.Amma’s appearance, the other part was the simple supporting ensemble which included the traditional kumkum and vibhuti on her forehead, 2 distinctive nose pins on either side and a kondai (bun) adorned with mallipoo (jasmine),” read an excerpt from her long note.

Under the guidance of Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar, granddaughter of Subbulakshmi, Anu recreated the sarees and other items.
