Mamata Banerjee rejects claims of giving money to doctor’s family

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday rejected allegations that the Kolkata Police offered bribes to the parents of a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at a Kolkata government hospital. Banerjee termed the allegations as slander against her government, saying the parents were never paid any money. The 32-year-old doctor’s father had last week alleged that the Kolkata Police tried to hush up the case and offered them money to keep quiet. Hitting back, the chief minister said, “I never offered money to the family of the deceased doctor, this is nothing but slander”. “I told the deceased doctor’s parents that if they want to do something in memory of their daughter, our government is with them. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel offered to resign after the RG Kar protests, but we need someone with knowledge of law and order before Durga Puja,” she said.
