Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, actor Purnima Bhagyaraj, and his children, actor Shantanu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.

The legendary filmmaker was active in public life until recently and just a few days before his death, he had attended the wedding of actor-politician Khushboo Sundar’s daughter in Goa.
Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in Erode district of Tamil Nadu, he started his journey in the film industry as an assistant to acclaimed filmmaker Bharathiraja before building his own successful career.
He became one of the most influential filmmaker-writers in Tamil cinema, known for his distinctive style of middle-class family dramas, sharp screenwriting and socially rooted storytelling, which defined an era of Tamil cinema in the 1980s and 1990s.
During his illustrious career, Bhagyaraj directed more than 25 films and acted in more than 75 films. He was considered one of the finest screenwriters of Tamil cinema, with his work earning widespread praise for its relatable characters, emotional depth and engaging narratives.
Some of his most famous films include Mundanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Drama and Darling, Darling, Darling, all of which are remembered as classics.
His contribution to Tamil cinema was so significant that former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and famous actor MG Ramachandran (MGR) publicly named Bhagyaraj as his successor in the film industry.
Bhagyaraj also made his mark in Hindi cinema through direction. last way (1986), in which Amitabh Bachchan played a dual role alongside Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Anupam Kher. The revenge drama became one of the notable Hindi films of the decade and showcased Bhagyaraj’s storytelling ability beyond Tamil cinema.
