Veteran classical singer and harmonium artiste, Pandit Sanjay Ram Marathe died at a hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane, his family announced on Monday. He was 68 years old. According to his family members, the artist suffered a severe heart attack and was admitted to a private hospital in Thane, where he died on Sunday night.
Pandit Sanjay Marathe was the eldest son of the famous musician Pandit Ram Marathe. He leaves behind a deeply rooted legacy in Indian classical music and theatre. Known for his expertise in harmonium and melodious singing, he actively participated in various programs to mark his father’s birth centenary this year.
In collaboration with his younger brother Mukund Marathe, Pandit Sanjay Marathe revived and staged the famous Marathi musical drama ‘Sangeet Mandarmala’ as part of the commemoration of his father’s centenary. The production received widespread praise for its innovative experiments while preserving the essence of traditional Marathi musical theatre.
Pandit Sanjay Marathe is survived by his wife, a son and a granddaughter.
