Varun Dhawan seeks protection of personality rights from Delhi High Court
Actor Varun Dhawan has secured interim protection from the Delhi High Court against online misuse of his identity. The order comes amid growing concerns over deepfakes and unauthorized digital content related to celebrities.

Actor Varun Dhawan has become the latest Bollywood celebrity to seek legal protection for his personality rights, with the Delhi High Court passing an interim order against unauthorized use of his identity online. The court directed removal of objectionable and exploitative content related to the actor on social media and digital platforms.
In a significant relief for Dhawan, a single-judge bench of Justice Jyoti Singh also directed social media intermediaries to ensure that the actor’s name, image and voice are not misused “in any form or manner”. This protection extends to deepfake images, pornographic links and other objectionable content allegedly spread online without her consent.

What security has Delhi High Court given to Varun Dhawan?
The interim order came after Dhawan approached the court over online misuse of his personality traits. As per the instructions issued, platforms hosting such content will have to remove it and take measures to prevent its further spread through digital and media channels.
The court order specifically covers deepfake content created without the actor’s permission, as well as unauthorized commercial exploitation involving unnamed parties, who are referred to as ‘John Doe’ defendants in the legal proceedings.
The case highlights growing concerns within the entertainment industry over the misuse of celebrity identities through artificial intelligence tools, manipulated scenes and unauthorized promotional material.
Which other celebrities have sought protection of personality rights?
Dhawan joins the growing list of actors who have moved the Delhi High Court seeking safeguards against online misuse of their identity and likeness.
In recent years, the court has granted similar protection to several public figures, including Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Arjun Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Jackie Shroff.
These legal protections are generally intended to prevent unauthorized commercial use, misleading endorsements, manipulated content, and objectionable content associated with celebrities without their consent.
Why are personality rights becoming important in the digital age?
The increasing use of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology has raised concerns about identity misuse, particularly for public figures whose images and voices are widely circulated online.
Legal experts and industry stakeholders have repeatedly raised concerns about the rapid spread of fabricated content, including morphed visuals and fake endorsements, which can impact reputation and lead to financial exploitation.
With the latest order in his favor, Dhawan becomes another prominent actor to ensure judicial intervention against unauthorized use of his personality and digital identity.
