Varanasi Update: SS Rajamouli considering replacing Rajat Kapoor in Mahesh Babu’s film

Ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli is planning a significant casting change in his much-awaited film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu in the lead role. According to industry sources, the director is considering replacing Rajat Kapoor, who was initially signed to play Mahesh Babu’s father in the big budget project. Although there has been no official confirmation, the development has sparked keen interest among fans and industry watchers.

A source close to the film says that Rajat Kapoor was chosen solely for his acting ability. “Rajat Kapoor is undoubtedly a talented actor and has garnered appreciation for his work in Hindi films like Mithya, Mixed Doubles and Siddharth,” the source said, according to Deccan Chronicle. However, creative differences appear to have emerged during the character development process. The source said, “The director and the actor are not on the same wavelength when it comes to shaping this important character in a very specific way.”

Creative differences prompt possible casting change

Known for his detailed character work and high expectations from his actors, Rajamouli reportedly felt that pushing the collaboration would not give them the performances they were looking for. “He doesn’t want to push things beyond limits and is therefore looking for a replacement. The director has also taken some time off from shooting,” the source said.

It is being told that this decision is not personal but completely creative. SS Rajamouli is known for delivering strong performances, but he is also known for taking tough decisions when his vision does not align with the execution. Insiders say the role of Mahesh Babu’s father is central to the story, making the casting choice particularly significant.

Varanasi is being described as a social-fantasy film with a complex story that unfolds across multiple time cycles. Mahesh Babu will reportedly be seen in a larger-than-life role, which will chronicle his journey from a forest adventurer to the symbolic incarnation of Lord Ram. In such a layered story, the character of the father plays an important emotional and thematic role.

The film already has a strong ensemble cast including Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran and R Madhavan, all expected to add depth to their respective parts. “Rajamouli strongly believes in multi-casting to give different weight and texture to each character he designs,” the source said.

Prakash Raj among the strong contenders?

Senior actor Prakash Raj is said to be the prime contender for the role. He previously played Mahesh Babu’s father in the blockbuster Dookudu and their on-screen chemistry was well appreciated. However, sources say that Rajamouli is also exploring other options before taking a final decision.
