A US Marine Corps fighter pilot suffered minor injuries after crashing into a mountain in Washington state on Saturday, sparking a wildfire, officials said.According to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred near Rimrock Lake at around 12:15 pm local time.The sheriff’s office said in a statement, “We received multiple calls reporting that a military aircraft crashed into a mountain in our county and the pilot ejected from the aircraft. Our Mountain Pass deputy made contact with the pilot, who suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. As a result of the crash, a fire broke out in the area.”It further said that the Army has been informed and will deploy personnel and resources to the crash site.CBS News quoted the United States Marine Corps as saying that the aircraft involved was an F/A-18 Hornet, based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.A Marine Corps statement said the fighter jet was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11 under the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and was involved in a “non-fatal accident” during a routine training exercise. The crash occurred about 55 miles southeast of Seattle.The cause of the incident is under investigation and may take several months to determine.
