An Airbnb host in the US was forced to add ‘no cryptocurrency mining’ to its list of instructions after a bizarre guest experience. according to business insiderAirbnb host Ashley Klass revealed in a video posted on TikTok that she had banned crypto mining in her short-term rental after she was hit with a hefty electricity bill of $1,500 (roughly Rs. 1.25 lakh). The guests initially looked like model tenants. They were “absolutely five stars”, Ms Klass said, with no problems or hiccups during their three-week stay. However, that was until guests turned his rental property into a makeshift crypto-mining hub and racked up utility fees by $1,500.

Ms Klaas said that after receiving the shocking electricity bill, she looked at the footage from her outdoor camera. He noticed that guests had brought at least 10 computer rigs, which he later learned were for crypto mining.

“It was cheaper for them to rent a house than to pay for electricity,” Ms. Klaas said in the video. business insider,

Specifically, cryptocurrency mining is a process that involves solving complex mathematical problems to earn digital currency. The entire process requires significant computational power which requires huge amounts of electricity. Due to environmental and financial concerns over the rise of crypto mining, the practice has been outlawed in some parts of China.

The Airbnb host said she messaged guests telling them she would charge them for the excessive electricity bill. However, guests fought her until she got Airbnb involved and shared documentation of the incident.

Apparently the guests had the money to pay him. Ms. Klass revealed in the comments section that the guests earned $100,000 (approximately Rs. 84 lakhs) during their three-week stay.

Meanwhile, in the comments section of Ms. Klass’s video, several Airbnb hosts mentioned that they also explicitly ban crypto mining in their listings. “No crypto mining in my rules. It’s ridiculous we have to do this,” one user wrote. “I’ve never heard of this, but thanks for the heads up! I’m going to update my list,” commented another.
