Update UPI Rules on 1 August: new boundaries, autope timings and you all have to know

In short

  • From 1 August, UPI users will be able to check their account balance only 50 times per day.
  • NPCI UPI is also offering fixed time slots for auto pay transactions
  • Interestingly, there is no change in the current UPI payment cap

From August 1, 2025, a new set of UPI rules will apply, and if you are regularly using an app like Paytm, PhonePe, GPAY or any other UPI platform, you would like to know what is changing. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees the UPI ecosystem, is presenting these new boundaries to reduce the pressure on the system and reduce issues such as delay and failed transactions. These changes cannot affect how you pay at your local grocery store, but they have limitations on things like balance check, status refresh, and more. NPCI says that the target is to make UPI smooth, more reliable and low outage, especially during peak hours. Here you need to know about the upcoming UPI rules.

What are the new UPI transactions boundaries from 1 August?

From next month, UPI users will be able to check their account balance only 50 times per day. Similarly, as often as users can see bank accounts connected to their phone number, it can be limited 25 times a day. These new caps are being added to cut unnecessary traffic on the system, some NPCI claims contribute to recession and outage during heavy use.

Are there changes in UPI autope features?

Yes. NPCI UPI is offering a fixed time slot for auto pay transactions. This means that Scheduled Payments – such as auto payment, membership, utility bill, or EMIS – will be processed during the day randomly randomly during specific windows. This is a rear visual change, but it helps to reduce the crowd on the stage and improve overall speed during regular use hours.

Will these changes affect all UPI users?

In short, yes. Whether you use UPI once or 20 times a day, new boundaries apply to all platforms on all users. However, if you do not continuously refresh your payment position or check your remaining amount several times, then you are unlikely to be a lot. These updates are mainly aimed at heavy users who inadvertently overload the system with frequent requests.

What is the maximum UPI payment allowed after the update?

Interestingly, there is no change in the current UPI payment cap. The boundaries of transactions remain the same – Rs 1 lakh per transaction for most cases, and up to Rs 5 lakh for some categories like healthcare or education. The update of August 1 does not touch these boundaries.

FAQS:

Is any action from users required for these new rules?

No immediate action is required on your share. Changes through your UPI apps will roll out automatically. Just be aware of new borders so that you do not run in unnecessary transactions blocks during the day.

Do these changes affect traders payments and bills?

Yes, but to the extent that auto pay timing can now follow the new fixed slot. Businesses relying on automated UPI collection may need to align with new time, but for most users – whether you are paying for your mobile recharge or membership – things will continue to work as always.

– Ends
