British police on Wednesday arrested two people, including an Indian-origin man, for allegedly spraying orange substance at England’s famous prehistoric UNESCO World Heritage site Stonehenge.

Environmental activist Rajan Naidu, 73, is a member of Just Stop Oil, a group notorious for its disruptive protests.

Videos on social media showed Naidu and other activists, wearing ‘Just Stop Oil’ branded T-shirts, spraying orange powder paint on giant rocks as they demanded the next British government legally commit to phasing out fossil fuels by 2030.

According to the environmental group, police also arrested 21-year-old student Niam Lynch along with Naidu.

According to an AFP report, Just Stop Oil has claimed the sprayed paint was “orange cornflour” and would soon wash off with rain, but experts managing the heritage site are investigating the “extent of the damage”.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the incident, calling it a “disgusting act of barbarism”.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the damage was “immense” and described Just Stop Oil as “pathetic”.

‘Stop the Oil’ activists have carried out similar acts in the past, closing down major roads, disrupting cultural and sporting events and even throwing soup at a Van Gogh painting.
