Avatar: Fire and Ash opened with Rs. Earned around Rs 22 crore (Rs 18 crore) at the Indian box office on Friday. This ranks the film as the highest opening day grossing film of the year and the eighth highest opening day grossing film for a Hollywood release in India.
Within the franchise, the original Avatar debuted as the third-highest Hollywood opener in India, behind only 2012’s Spider-Man 3, while Avatar: The Way of Water recorded the second-highest opening behind Avengers: Endgame.
Avengers: Endgame remains the highest-grossing film on opening day for Hollywood almost seven years after its release, and it’s doing so by quite a margin. The Avatar films were probably the strongest contenders to challenge this. The Way of Water achieved record numbers in South India, but was a weak hit in the Hindi circuit, resulting in a low. Avatar: Fire and Ashes, meanwhile, isn’t even in the picture.
The next challenge is likely to come from the Avengers themselves, this time next year with Avengers: Doomsday. If this film had come out in 2022 or 2023, it would have almost been a record-breaking film. However, given the current state of the MCU, this is not a sure thing.
