2025 has not been a favorable year for Tamil cinema. The regional film industry saw several major disappointments last year namely Vidamuyarchi, Coolie, Thug Life, Retro, Madharasi and others. Furthermore, the industry also missed a Thalapathy Vijay film, which would have contributed significantly to the annual box office report. Here’s a look at the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2025 at the Tamil Nadu box office.
Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly beat Rajinikanth’s Coolie to top the charts and emerged as the highest-grossing film in the state. Directed by Adhik Ravichandran, the film collected Rs. Earned Rs. Earned 145.50 crores in Tamil Nadu, a big success. Coolie slipped to second place, earning Rs. Earned more than. 144.25 crores. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj with the support of a huge budget and a strong star cast, the performance of this film was disappointing.
Apart from Good Bad Ugly, Ajith Kumar also had another release in 2025, Vidamuyarchi, which took the third position with Rs. 82.25 crores. It failed at the box office, as the film could not impress the audience. Dragon was another major Tamil hit last year. Pradeep Ranganathan’s film grossed more than Rs. 78.50 crore and became the fourth highest grossing film of the year.
At the fifth position, it is the Kannada original film, Kantara: Chapter 1, which has collected around Rs. 69.50 crores in Tamil Nadu. Interestingly, it is the only non-Tamil film in the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2025 at the Kollywood box office. Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s reunion Thug Life also could not make it to the list.
