Apple CEO Tim Cook made headlines once again, an old video of 2024 is being widely shared online, showing why technical giants continue to manufacture iPhones in China rather than transferring production in the United States.
In a small clip, Cook addresses a general perception that Apple manufactures its equipment in China due to cheap labor. He counts the approach, saying that China is not a low cost manufacturing destination for years. Instead, he says that the real reason lies in the country’s unmatched manufacturing capabilities and technical expertise.
He said, “The popular concept is that companies come to China due to low labor costs. I am not sure to which part of China they go, but the truth is that China stopped being a low labor cost country years ago,” he said.
According to Cook, what China separates is not the cost, but its workforce scale and quality. Apple’s devices require extremely accurate tooling and advanced material handling, and Cook says that Chinese engineers have a level of skills required for him. He further explains the difference between the two countries, given that it can be difficult to collect rooms filled with tooling engineers in the US, in China, you can fill many football grounds with professionals who specialize in that area.
This old video of Cook has gone viral when political pressure is increasing in the US to promote local manufacturing. President Donald Trump recently said that he wants companies like Apple to start making equipment on American earth. A spokesperson of the White House also indicated Apple’s upcoming $ 500 billion domestic investment as an indication that the company could start production in the US.
However, according to reports, such a step is unlikely in the near future. Bloomberg has noted that the US still lacks efficient labor force, advanced facilities and strong supplier ecosystems that are required to support Apple’s manufacturing scale. For now, the kind of infrastructure required does not exist outside Asia.
At the same time, Apple is allegedly working to reduce its dependence on China by reinforcing its presence in India. The company is currently expanding production in the country with a 300 -acre iPhone manufacturing plant (by Foxconn) under development in Bengaluru. In the previous year, Apple assembled a price of $ 22 billion in India-a long-term interest in diversifying a 60 percent growth-production compared to the backward years.
So when Apple can invest more in the US, its manufacturing works are basically likely to live in Asia for the future, China and now India are playing an important role in their global supply chain.
